Student or Graduate Research Assistants (SHK / WHB) (m/f/d) to support the Core Unit Bioinformatics - CUBiMed.RUB - Bochum

Universität Bochum
Raum Bochum

Dein Job

To support our team, we are looking for one student assistant (SHK) or graduate research assistant with a Bachelor's degree (WHB) - depending on current student status, for 8 hours/week.

About Us
The Medical Bioinformatics group at Ruhr University Bochum investigates a wide variety of multi-omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) as well as their integration - utilizing precision medicine approaches, diverse biomarker identification workflows, and machine learning. Parts of the group belong to the Core Unit Bioinformatics of the Faculty of Medicine - CUBiMed.RUB, which supports life science researchers with consulting, data analysis, custom software, and reproducible Nextflow workflows. For this purpose, we also have access to our own compute cluster in the RUB data center.

Your Tasks

  • Assisting in the development of tools, modules, and (reproducible) workflows, e.g., using Nextflow / nf-core

  • Supporting the evaluation and analysis of (bio)medical omics data in the context of consulting and service requests for CUBiMed.RUB

  • Testing, benchmarking, and documenting tools and workflows

The specific areas you focus on will be aligned with your interests and prior knowledge.

Your Profile

You should meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Programming skills (Python, R, Rust, or C/C++)

  • Basic knowledge of statistical analyses (pertaining to omics data)

Additionally, you possess curiosity, reliability, computer affinity, and an independent working style.

The following are also advantageous:

  • Statistical distributions/testing, False Discovery Rate (FDR), multiple testing, confounding variables in studies (confounders), statistical power

  • Basics of genomics, genome structure, central dogma (DNA-RNA-protein), genetic code, DNA/RNA sequencing

  • Knowledge in bioinformatics (transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics)

  • Experience with workflow systems (Nextflow, Snakemake)

  • Experience in handling Linux systems (SSH and terminal)

  • Containerization of applications

  • Knowledge in R and/or Python (data analysis, statistics, visualization)

  • Knowledge in Rust, C, or C++ (development of efficient tools)

You are not expected to know all of this: If you bring some of these skills and are eager to learn the rest, we look forward to your application.

We Offer

  • Collaboration within a collegial bioinformatics team

  • Workplace at the RUB (campus), partially working from home (remote work) is possible

  • Exciting medical-bioinformatics tasks with a real connection to research

  • Access to powerful High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure

  • The opportunity to gain practical experience and further expand your skills in programming, data analysis, and bioinformatics

  • Compensation according to the standard rates for research assistants at Ruhr University Bochum

Application
We look forward to receiving your application (a brief cover letter, CV, and, if applicable, current transcript of records) via email.
