The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien seeks to hire a

 

Student Assistant (m/f/d)

 

to support the research project “Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalisation (MOTRA),” funded by BMFTR, for up to 10 hours per week, starting as soon as possible for 6 months with the possibility of extending the contract. The student assistant will be required to be physically present in Hamburg at least once every two weeks. Remuneration is based on the hourly rate for student assistants at the University of Hamburg and currently amounts to €13.98 (bachelor's student) / €16.05 (master's student) per hour.

 

Tasks:

·       Co-development of issues and stances to evaluate in German politics.

·       Coding of X (formerly Twitter) posts by German politicians.

·       Literature search and management using Zotero.

·       Participation in script writing and programming.

 

General requirements:

·       Proficiency in German, ideally as a native language, and English  

·       Excellent analytical and comparative skills

·       Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently

·       Enrolment as a student of political science, sociology, economics, criminology, or related disciplines at a German university (if BA; 3rd semester or higher starting in April 2025)

 

Desired requirements:

·       Familiarity with research on radicalisation and extremism (e.g., right-wing, left-wing, or islamist extremism)

·       Experience with the collection, management and analysis of social media data

·       Experience with the collection, management, and analysis of survey data

·       Knowledge of Python and R or Stata

·       Knowledge of natural language processing (NLP) or other computational social science techniques
