We are looking for a student assistant/research assistant (SHK/WHK) in the DFG research project Infrastructures of Protection: Planning for Catastrophes to Come (French case, lead by Prof. Dr. Christine Hentschel) in the context of the DFG Research Unit The Promise of Security in Catastrophic Times

Workload: 20 hours per month, with a possible extension to 40 hours*

 

Salary: Based on the rate for research assistants at the UHH:

WHK: 17,39 Euro (and from April 2027: 18,16 Euro)

SHK: 15,20 Euro (and from April 2027: 17,90 Euro)

 

Tasks:

  • Literature research on preparedness and adaptation measures—both government orchestrated and citizen-led—to changing climatic conditions and the threat of war, especially in France
  • Collection and organization of relevant governmental documents, municipal plans and bottom-up initiatives in the context of climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, civil protection, and alternative civil society projects, including the collection of newspaper articles and social media material, with a focus on France
  • Help organize the collaboration in the research team, e.g., on Nextcloud, Microsoft Teams, Obsidian, Evernote, etc.
  • Support the coding process of the material with MAXQDA
  • Support overall organizational and logistical tasks at PROMISE during workshops or collective seminars

 

Your profile

  • You are an MA student or an advanced BA student in the social sciences or humanities with very good French language skills (especially reading) and good English skills (speaking and writing).
  • You can work independently and in a structured manner and are a good team worker.
  • You have good research skills (e.g., using academic databases and literature management).
  • You have some experience with qualitative social science methods and relevant platforms.
  • Knowledge of design software (e.g., Adobe InDesign) is a plus.
