Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/x) – Process model for friction stir welding, full time, TVL E13, for 2 years

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS) is a research centre at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, focusing on the development and application of multi-scale simulation tools for advanced materials. ICAMS is embedded into a network of national and international collaborations. Researchers and students benefit from this top international and interdisciplinary environment. The department Micromechanical and Macroscopic Modeling is actively doing research on process-microstructure-property relationships for metallic materials under various conditions. The focus of our work lies on scale-bridging modeling in close collaboration with experimental partners.

The tasks associated with the position include implementing a process model for Friction Stir Welding (FSW) based on physical principles and applying the model to predict microstructures resulting from FSW process by considering the complex interaction of thermo-mechanical loads and severe plastic deformation. The model predictions are validated against experimental results. The position offers substantial freedoms to implement creative, pragmatic solutions in a supportive environment.

 

Your tasks:

  • Implementation of a micromechanical process model based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method and crystal plasticity.
  • Formulation of a macroscopic mean field process model describing the microstructure evolution during the FSW process based on statistical descriptors obtained from the micromechanical model.
  • Validation of predicted microstructures and residual stresses based on experimental data from collaboration partners.

Dein Profil

Your profile:

  • Outstanding, science-driven candidate with a strong background in mechanics of materials and a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Computational Engineering, or Physics
  • Expertise and experience with numerical methods in solid mechanics, including large plastic deformations, ideally with crystal plasticity
  • Fundamental understanding of materials physics and mechanisms of microstructure evolution under thermo-mechanical loads
  • Willingness to collaborate in a team with other modeling and experimental research groups
  • Demonstrated programming experience in Fortran and Python

Further information:

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV-L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV-L.
