Faculty of Physics and Astronomy:
Experimental Nuclear Physics I

In order to fill a fixed-term position in part-time (29.8725 hours/week = 75%) as soon as possible, we are looking for  a

PhD student (m/f/x) to work on investigations of baryonic resonances that are produced in interactions and decay into final states with open strangeness

The department FAIR Forschung NRW (FFN) invites outstanding candidates to apply for a PhD position in experimental hadron physics. The research will focus on the study of π−p interactions at varying center-of-mass energies within the second resonance region (1.6–1.8 GeV) using the HADES (High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer) detector at SIS18 at GSI in Darmstadt. This energy regime is rich in nucleon excitations and provides a unique opportunity to investigate broad and overlapping baryon resonances, contributing to a deeper understanding of the non- perturbative regime of QCD. The studied energies are near the threshold for the productionof strange hadrons, allowing access to resonance decays involving open strangeness such as N ∗/∆ → KY or also Y ∗ → KN, Y π. These channels are of particular interest for exploring the strangeness content of baryon resonances and testing QCD-inspired models.

The focus of the PhD project is the study of strange resonance production and decay in hadronic reactions. This involves the reconstruction and analysis of exclusive final states, as well as the extraction of differential cross sections. A key objective is to contribute to the search for missing baryon resonances predicted by QCD-inspired models. The experimental results will be com- pared with predictions from partial wave analyses and various theoretical frameworks to deepen our understanding of hadron structure.

Your tasks:

  • The successful candidate will be involved in all phases of the experiment, including preparation and simulation studies for the pion beamtime, active participation in beamtime and shift work during data taking at the HADES experiment at SIS18, and subsequent data analysis.
  • Responsibilities will also include data quality assurance, detector calibration and alignment, and the development of data analysis workflows using the ROOT framework.
  • The candidate will present research findings at collaboration meetings and scientific conferences and will prepare a PhD thesis based on the project outcomes.
