INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE OF APPLICATION SYSTEMS | AT THE NEXT POSSIBLE DATE
The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technically oriented universities in Germany in one of Europe’s most vibrant high-tech and industrial areas. The university is a reliable employer, partner for technology transfer and is committed to the interdisciplinary integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences based on the fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary level.
A W1 professorship in "Quantum Computing" is available at the University of Stuttgart in the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Information Technology. The professorship is aimed at outstanding young scientists in the early career phase.
The professorship will be part of the Institute of Architecture of Application Systems (IAAS). We are looking for an individual who can represent the area of quantum computing in research and teaching. The position is intended to be complementary to the W3 professorship “quantum software”, which is in the process of being filled. The Department of Physics has developed several hardware platforms; a collaboration with the members of the Department of Physics is desirable. Possible foci of the professorship are:
Quantum algorithms and their complexity
Efficient quantum error correction and quantum error mitigation
Methods for design, test and verification of quantum circuits
The ideal candidate can relate to some of the University’s strategic profile areas: quantum technologies, simulation science, architecture and adaptive buildings, digital humanities, and production technologies, as well as to existing multi-partner initiatives, such as Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung Center for Quantum Photonics, IQST, GSaME, SimTech or IntCDC. Cooperation with the institutes of Computer Science and Physics is desirable.
The prospective professor is expected to contribute to teaching and curriculum development in Bachelor and Master degree programs, both in German and English, as well as to actively solicit external funding and to participate in the University’s collaborative research projects. At the latest after the appointment as W3, the candidate is expected to participate in introductory teaching in Computer Science, alternating with other professors.
We are searching for an individual who is distinguished by high-ranking scientific achievements with international visibility.
For a qualitative assessment of your academic accomplishments, we kindly ask you to submit a short description of your three most important scientific achievements, which should be no longer than one page in total. Possible successes may include, for example, those in the fields of research, teaching, science and society, knowledge and technology transfer, inventions and patents, software development or spin-offs.
The requirements for employment listed in § 51 Baden-Württemberg university law apply. The position is a tenure track position leading to an appointment as a W3 professor in case of a positive evaluation. For more information on the criteria of evaluation and quality management, please visit the website uni-stuttgart.de/tenure-track-en.
Written applications, including CV, scans of diplomas, a short summary of scientific and teaching accomplishments, a structured list of publications, the candidate’s track record of successful research grants, and a short statement on current and planned research activities as well as copies of the certificates should be submitted online via https://berufungen.uni-stuttgart.de by December 5, 2025 addressed to the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Prof. Marco Aiello. Please send postal applications to Universität Stuttgart, Berufungsmanagement, Keplerstraße 7, 70174 Stuttgart, Germany
