The Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) conducts research to advance intelligent systems that perceive, learn, and interact. Through fundamental research across computational, physical, and social dimensions, we shape artificial intelligence and robotics to advance knowledge and benefit society.

 

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Implementation of small projects in the area of Linux configuration
  • Monitoring of file systems
  • Monitoring of departmental Linux servers
  • Installation of Linux and Windows clients
  • Creating backup images of servers with DRLM
  • Analysis and correlation of system logs
  • Replacement and/or reinstallation of Linux servers
  • Handling IT tickets submitted by users

Dein Profil

Education & Experience

The following skills and knowledge are required:

  • Knowledge of Linux
    • Common architectures (SUSE/Red Hat).
    • Open-source operating system fundamentals: kernel concepts, shell usage, and file system structure.
    • File and directory management from the command line.
    • User and group administration of permissions and basic security policies.
    • Processes and services.
    • File systems and storage: mounting, monitoring disc usage, understanding partitions, and storage devices.
    • Basic networking: IP addressing, DNS, connectivity, SSH, and network troubleshooting (ping, traceroute).
    • Documentation and technical procedures: recording activities, maintaining logs, and following standard protocols.
  • Interest in learning more about system administration, networking, and security.
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative international team supporting top-level researchers from around the world.
  • Be currently enrolled as a bachelor's or master's student in a relevant subject such as computer science, software engineering, or computer engineering at a university in Germany.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Be able to work on-site at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, Germany.

 

The following additional skills and knowledge would be beneficial:

  • Be pursuing a master’s degree in a relevant topic.
  • Good written and spoken German.
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux:
    • Virtualization of systems.
    • Containerization and service isolation concepts.
    • Version control or file versioning concepts (e.g., Git).
    • Experience monitoring systems and services.

 

Our offer

Student assistants without a bachelor’s degree will be paid €13.90 per hour, and those with a bachelor's degree will receive €14.40 per hour. Working time is up to 20 hours per week during lecture periods, and up to 39 hours per week during lecture-free periods.
